Breitling Top Time

Ask a member of the general public which watch they associate with the iconic super-spy, James Bond, and the answer may vary depending on the age of the person being questioned: those above a certain age will answer “Rolex Submariner”, those born more recently will state “Omega Seamaster”.

But there have been other watches, besides these, featured in both the films and the novels, and one such watch is the Breitling Top Time; a somewhat unusually named chronograph from the mid 1960s that doubled as a geiger counter in Thunderball.

The Breitling watch that we are interested in is the somewhat more conventional looking (and functioning!) 810 chronograph with a round case (not an extended rectangular one, like Bond’s watch) and the Venus 179 movement.

The Top Time’s place on The List has been earned by the very fact that it is not (yet, at least) a watch that is purely bought as a retro trend item or as an investment. This means that it is unlikely to be seen on the wrist of a poseur who is merely buying what is currently de rigeur, or by a collector who will handle it only with white cotton gloves. It is a classic watch, with timeless aesthetics, that denotes that the wearer has the knowledge and good taste not to let trends, or the Top Time’s comparatively low purchase price, dictate what they choose to wear on their wrist.

With its white face and black sub-dials, the Top Time has similarities with Rolex’s legendary Paul Newman Daytona, but it is still distinctive in its own right, with the orange seconds hand giving the timepiece a particular vintage appeal. It almost goes without saying that the only model in which we are interested is the stainless steel one, which radiates an air of elegant sportiness, reminiscent of its more famous contemporary, the Heuer Carrera.

With a decent leather strap, the Top Time appears both vintage and modern; certainly distinct from, and sleeker than, much of Breitling’s current range.

Under the skin is a 19 jewel Venus 179 movement, whose origins date back to the pre-war period. Beating at a fairly leisurely 18000vph, this is a durable movement that, if serviced regularly, will keep good time. It is not, perhaps as technically sophisticated as the later automatic chronograph movements from Valjoux and Zenith, but, then, a Ferrari 250 GTO is not as sophisticated as an Enzo – to compare sometimes is meaningless.

Despite the Top Time having been a volume seller for Breitling in the 1960s, it is not the sort of watch that you are likely too come across on the wrist of anyone but a member of the Breitling cognoscenti. And therein lies its appeal.

Breitling Cosmonaute Limited Edition

1962. The space race was well under way. Already a supplier to civilian and military aviation, Breitling naturally took a keen interest in this new human adventure. Based on the Navitimer chronograph, the brand’s technicians developed the Cosmonaute, a space-going version of this instrument indicating the daily 24 hours in a single sweep of the dial. Given the extremely relative nature of day and night in space, this configuration prevents possible confusion between midday and midnight. On May 24th 1962, the astronaut Scott Carpenter tested this instrument under real-life conditions during his orbital flight aboard the Aurora 7 capsule.

For its 125th anniversary, Breitling has chosen to issue a limited series of the model that became the first wrist chronograph to experience space travel. Only 1,000 of these Cosmonaute watches will be produced, all equipped for the occasion with an original version of the intriguing 24-hour dial. Further accentuating its distinctive character and in tribute to a modern design icon from the 1960s, the Cosmonaute Limited Edition is fitted exclusively with the rigid perforated Air Racer bracelet.

Saratoga Springs, N.Y.--Watch brand Breitling and upstate New York retailer Northeastern Fine Jewelry, the brand's Capital Region retail partner, will serve as the official timepiece sponsors of the 2010 season at the Saratoga Race Course.

The designation, announced recently in a New York Racing Association (NYRA) press release, means that both the Breitling and Northeastern Fine Jewelry brand logos will be featured on the Saratoga horse racing track and will be broadcast worldwide on NYRA TV.

The Breitling logo will alternate with the time of day between races as wagering odds are posted, while the Northeastern logo will appear on the "Minutes to Post" clock during the post-parade coverage, the release says.

The 142nd racing season at Saratoga kicks off this Friday.

In addition, Northeastern Fine Jewelry and Breitling will present special timepieces to both the owner and the jockey of the horse that wins the 141st running of the $1 million Travers Stakes, which is known as the "Mid-Summer Derby" and is scheduled for Aug. 28. During Travers Week, Breitling timepieces will be on display at Saratoga, courtesy of Northeastern Fine Jewelry, and throughout the meet, four Breitling-branded clocks will be featured at some of the race course's most historic locations, including the paddock and the Jockey Silks Room.

Breitling Casebacks have 15 sides, which make them a bit odd and seemingly at first difficult to open. However, they can be opened with a simple high quality Jaxa opener. This MAY slightly damage or put small dents in the case back sides as the Jaxa openers do not fit perfectly. Remember if you open the case, a proper case holder should be used as well to secure the case.

The more proper way to open a Breitling caseback is to use a Breitling 15-sided caseback die designed for use in Horotec or Bergeon openers. These are large devices with big wheels on the top that look something like this:

Tibaldi was Italy’s first ever manufacturer of fountain pens, founded in 1916. Phi – the concept known as the Divine Proportion – informs every aspect of the structure of all Tibaldi pens apparently, and that includes the proportion between the pen’s cap and the visible portion of the barrel when the pen is closed.

They are marking a range of pens for Bentley, including the flagship, Mulsanne. A Limited Edition fountain pen and roller ball (90 of each style and veneer), designed in collaboration with Bentley’s own styling studio and drawing design cues from the new Mulsanne.

The company also widens its professional clientele to include the American armed forces. 1954 saw the creation of the Navitimer, a wrist instrument equipped with the famous navigation computer. This super chronograph becomes a firm favoutite among the pilots across the globe. By this stage, Breitling is already supplying the major international airlines with cockpit clocks. In 1962, Astronaut Scott Carpenter wears the Cosmonaught chronograph during his orbital fligh aboard the Aurora 7 space capsule.

1969 saw Breitling introduce the first ever self winding chronograph. Spotting Fake Breitling Watches Casebacks

In the past, one of the most improperly reproduced things on replicas was the caseback. This is still the case to some degree, though better fakes exist with almost indistinguishable casebacks.

Today we will look at the less perfect copies, as the real ones are nearly indistinguishable save for slightly finer etching of the words in some cases. Even the serial numbers are random on some replicas!

Below are two casebacks of the Breitling B-1 quartz watch. This (and its successor the Airwolf) is the ONLY watch in the entire Breitling line that has this engine-turbine back, and as you can see, this fake is very poorly reproduced.

Not only is the fake above poorly reproduced, but if you could see the front, you'd see that its definately NOT a B-1, and infact is some sort of amalgamation of several different types of watches - not just Breitling.

The Fake B-1 copy casebacks do not have the actual vents in the engine turbine like the real one does, and from the picture you can see the difference in fit and finish.

Next here we have a fake caseback that is representative of what a standard Breitling looks like, and one of many fake variations. As you can see, the back is not rounded, and the markings are not very deep - evidence that the back is stamped very poorly. The real dial on the left shows the superior workmanship of a properly casted and engraved caseback.

Note: Some earlier casebacks were indeed flat, such as the ones on the Astromat.

And finally, below we have a fake and real Super Avenger caseback. The caseback on the right obviously lacks the finesse and execution of the genuine Super Avenger caseback on the left. Also note the flat and poorly designed area surrounding the caseback. There are some obvious mistakes, and spending some time with the genuine article can really help you spot the clones. You will also find that the majority of the fakes out there have the incorrect caseback for the model.

Spotting Fake Dials

There are several things that you are going to see that are wrong with almost every single replica Breitling out there. Replicas are never painted and embossed with the same level of precision that the genuine article will be. Take a look below.

On the left you have a genuine Breitling Navitimer dial, with a perfect Breitling anchor on the second hand, while the fake on the right has an imperfect second hand anchor, and as you can see the embossed wings logo is blurred and smeared into itself. You will notice that most if not all fakes will have smeared writing on the dials, especially if looked at under a loupe.

Models that have an applied logo are easy to spot with a trained eye. The applied logo on a replica is never done very well. On the left you have a genuine applied wings logo from a Wings Automatic model, and on the right you have a fake applied wings logo. Spotting the Breitling Fakes

It used to be easy to see the difference between real and fake Breitling with a little bit of knowledge, but now even the pros can be fooled.

There are a few ways to see what the differences are in the good fakes usually:

Date Font

Date font is never correct between the replicas and the real models, unless it is an modifcation done afterwards by modders out there that try to improve the manufactured fakes.

Below is an example of a fake SuperOcean Steelfish and a real one. Not all real Breitling have the same date font either so do not use these examples as definitive.

Notice that the real date font fills the space a little bit better than the fake one. It is typical of Breitling date fonts to try and fill the space with the number evenly.

Luminous Paint

One of most poorly done things on the replica Breitling is the luminous paint. They are rarely painted on properly and typically do not reach all the edges of the indexes that they are painted on.

The example below shows a real Breitling Chronomat evolution and a fake, and how the paint on the fake leaves out little bits around the edges and corners due to poor quality control and craftmanship.

This appears to be a common theme among the fakes and I think should be quite reliable in idenifying them as of this writing.

Movement

Usually, fakes do not have decorated movements, however this is beginning to change. Most fakes have a plain chinese made copy of the movement, as shown below.

More and more I am seeing decorated fake movements, that are not really decorated properly. As you can see, the real Breitling Caliber 13 movement below has the Breitling Logo in block letters. The fake ones I have seen have all had the Breitling Script logo rather than the block letters.

Some models of Real Breitling have the script logo on the rotor decoration of the movement as well, so the script is not a guarantee of a fake movement either. The machine turned decoration on the movement does appear to be missing however on the fakes, even with the decorated rotor. As you can see above there should be extensive pearlage and circular paterning on the authentic movement.

Bracelet

The Bracelets are often the easiest things to spot the authenticity of, however that doesn't mean that the watch is real or fake either, as a fake bracelet can be put on a real watch, and vice versa.

Below are pictures of the Screw Holes on the opposite side of the bracelet as where the screws go in. These examples are of a Pro and Pro II bracelet. Notice on the fake, the dimples are curved, whereas on the real one, they are flat. Depending on the bracelet you get (pilot, navi, pro, etc) the real bracelet may be completely flat or slightly curved in the dimple. The replica models however always have a very curved appearance as you can see from the photo.

There is also a bit more visible on the back of where the logos are stamped on the fake bracelets. The real bracelets often have a LITTLE bit of visible stamping on the back, but not nearly as much as the fake bracelets as you can see from the photos below. Sometimes I get emails from guys saying they have some stamping visible on the back and they are worried they got a fake. This is not definitive as the real ones have a bit sometimes as well, just not as much as the fakes.

Sizing Your Breitling Ocean Racer Strap by Aleister

This is probably how the Breitling Ocean Racer strap looks when delivered to you (but without the spring bar):

First, remove your existing strap/bracelet so you get the case alone:

Now, transfer the spring bars to your Breitling Ocean Racer strap and then attach the strap to the case. I prefer to have the wings on my clasp/deployant the same direction as the wings on the dial of the watch:

When looking at the deployant, the red circled pin is for the deployant mechanism and has nothing to do with sizing the strap. Do NOT try to remove this one:

I prefer to set the micro adjuster in the middle when sizing the watch. That way I have some room to make it both more and less tight:

Here you see the spring bar for one side of the deployant. Compress it and remove the strap:

Now, cut with a sharp knife along the line, marked with red. Only cut away 1 piece at the same time - better to do it multiple times than getting a strap that's too short. When cutting, avoid damaging the hole for the spring bar:

Insert the spring bar from the cut piece into the strap, and then put it back into the deployant:

Now, move to the other side of the deployant. The spring bar is located inside the deployant at the red circle:

Repeat the cutting step from above (look at the same pic if you really need another pic ) and re-insert the strap.

Continue to move from one side of the deployant to the other, removing one piece per turn, till the strap feels tight enough. Remember to check that the micro adjuster is still in it's middle position.
